Welcome to the Environment Agency's online River Thames conditions update service which displays our current advice to river users. We display warning boards at our locks to inform river users of conditions that may make navigating difficult and dangerous.

This page shows our current advice for each reach of the river between Cricklade and Teddington. We will update this information regularly when warning boards are being displayed at locks and as river conditions change. You can also sign up to our RSS service if you would like to receive updates.

Information for boaters

River Conditions and Navigation

Obstruction: Emergency River Restriction

When: Wednesday 17 October 2018 until further notice

Where: 50 metres upstream of Windsor and Eton Footbridge, Windsor Reach

What’s happening: Fallen tree 50 metres upstream of Windsor and Eton Footbridge

A tree has fallen 50 metres upstream of Windsor and Eton Footbridge.  It is extending half way across the river.  Our team is working as quickly as possible to arrange the removal of the tree.  In the meantime, passage is still possible through the centre arch of Windsor and Eton Footbridge with extreme care and caution.  Do not attempt to navigate through the Windsor, left arch of the footbridge.

PLEASE LEAVE LOCK CHAMBERS FULL (AND GATES CLOSED) WHEN NAVIGATING UPSTREAM, DO NOT LEAVE THEM DRAINING DURING THIS PERIOD OF LOW RAINFALL.

Currently, river levels and flows are low. However, be aware that heavy bursts of rain can increase levels and flows rapidly. Meanwhile, watch out for shallows near the river bank and shoals on the inside of bends

For water levels go to https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/river-and-sea-levels

For flow rates go to http://www.gaugemap.co.uk

Navigation marks on shoals and obstructions

When navigating upstream, leave red buoys to the left and green buoys to the right. When navigating downstream remember that the opposite rule applies. Avoid yellow and orange buoys as they mark hazards. For further advice, ask the local duty Lock Keeper.

Services out of order

Romney Lock public power intermittent fault - may be on hand wind only out of lock keeper hours

Mapledurham pump out.

Benson electric charging point.

Annual registration 2018

If you keep your boat anywhere on the non-tidal Thames (including in marinas) you need to register your boat and pay the annual fee or risk being prosecuted for non-compliance. If you launch your boat after 1 September, you can get a 50% discount on the annual registration fee. Also, there is a 50% saving on registration fees for tenders at any time of the year. Contact the boat registration team on 03708 506 506.

Speed limit

The speed limit for all vessels (except rowing coach boats training crews) on the non-tidal Thames is 8kph or 4.3kts or 5mph. Do not create wash whatever speed you are navigating at.

Key

Caution strong stream
We advise users of all boats not to navigate because the strong flows make it difficult and dangerous.
Caution stream increasing
We advise users of all unpowered boats not to navigate and users of powered boats to find a safe mooring. This is because river flows are likely to strengthen and red boards could be displayed very soon and without warning.
Caution stream decreasing
We advise users of all unpowered boats not to navigate and users of powered boats to navigate with caution.
